Block vs Brick: Which is Better for Construction in Pakistan?

A practical comparison of concrete blocks and clay bricks for construction in Pakistan — cost, strength, thermal performance, and best use cases.

The choice between concrete blocks and clay bricks is one of the most common decisions in Pakistani construction. Both have legitimate applications — the right choice depends on project type, budget, location, and performance requirements.

Clay Bricks

Traditional clay bricks (standard size 9" × 4.5" × 3") are widely used across Pakistan. They offer good thermal mass, are locally available, and are familiar to most masons. Cost ranges from Rs 12–18 per brick depending on quality and location.

Concrete Blocks

Concrete blocks (typically 16" × 8" × 8" or 12" × 8" × 8") are faster to lay, require less mortar, and offer better dimensional consistency. They are preferred for commercial and industrial construction. Cost ranges from Rs 45–80 per block.

Thermal Performance

Clay bricks have better thermal mass — they absorb heat during the day and release it at night, moderating interior temperatures. Hollow concrete blocks with insulation can match or exceed brick performance in extreme climates.

Cost Comparison

On a per-square-metre of wall basis, concrete blocks are typically 10–20% cheaper than clay bricks when labour is included, due to faster laying speed. However, this varies significantly by region and labour rates.

Build Axis Recommendation

For residential construction in Karachi and Lahore, clay bricks remain the standard for external walls. Concrete blocks are preferred for internal partitions, commercial structures, and industrial buildings. Always consult your structural engineer for load-bearing walls.
